Let me say "Thank You" to all of you guys for your help. This has been a crazy project. It's been nuts with the broken rings, wrong rings, and leaky base gaskets. But this is supposed to be fun, right?

Let me kind of recap because pages 2 and 3 of this thread get a little hectic with me trying to figure out what was going on with this build.

It turns out that my original piston rings were not correct. Right out of the box, I had the correct top and bottom rings. But I had the wrong oil rings the first time. That is what was giving me fits getting the piston into the cylinder which then caused the broken ring.

When I called to get new piston rings, I did not know that I had the wrong oil rings the first time. I was sent new a new package of rings. That package had the wrong top and bottom rings but the correct oil rings.

So I called and got another set of rings. It was exactly the same - wrong upper and lower rings but correct oil rings.

I get a new package of rings overnight shipped from the manufacture which do have the correct rings. The install was a breeze. I fired up the new motor for the first time and it ran great. I noticed an oil leak at the cylinder base gasket.

The next morning after running my new motor for the first time, I get another overnight package directly from the piston ring manufacturer. It was another set of piston rings... just the oil rings and a note saying not to use the oil rings they sent me yesterday because they were the wrong oil rings.

I then called my dealer who originally sold me the big bore kit and expressed me deep frustration. He then quickly got on the phone with the piston manufacture and expressed he deep dissatisfaction. The explanation for the last package of oil rings was because the shipping department were unsure whether they last package was correct with the oil rings. It turned out they were the correct oil rings and I just ended up with an extra set of oil rings.

That was kinda screwy business not to call but in the end it worked out... with the piston rings anyway.

I was relieved I had the correct piston rings but I still needed to redo all my work because of the leaking cylinder base gasket. I pulled everything back apart and replaced both the cylinder base gasket and the head gasket.

I have not actually ridden the Rhino yet but I have run it in my garage to check for leaks or anything weird. I do not see any oil dripping from the motor like before, and I don't have any milked oil.

When I decided to do the big bore kit, I purchased new fuel mapping hardware. I bought the Bazzaz with the Autotune. I already have a MSD 3D which I will keep for the ignition management. I need to do more tuning with the Bazzaz. I rode around my yard and that thing is going crazy mapping.

Already I can tell this 734 is going to give me a decent boost in power. I can hardly wait to do some real tuning and get this motor broke in.

Thanks again for all of your help thus far. I'm not totally out of the chopping block but I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

I didn't mean to write a book, but you are right. This has been a huge learning experience. Seriously, I am happy I did this because I understand engines in a more complete way after this project. Things that I thought were super delicate on a motor are tougher parts than I realized. And parts that I thought were tough are actually very delicate and precise.

Like you said, this is very educational for me. I'm a tech oriented guy. I like to know the way things work and how they work.

I called you cell to talk about tuning with the Bazzaz. I didn't talk to you; rather, I talked to a really nice lady who walked me through the program. I wonder who that could be...

I couldn't figure out why my motor was running real bad and missing when I gassed it.

Turns out you have "APPLY CHANGES" when you do the self mapping feature. Rolling Eyes

Plus, the base map on there was all jacked up. The motor doesn't like going from -14% fuel to +63% fuel in adjacent cells. I'm such a dummy.

I just started over with a blank map and let it go to work. Within minutes, the thing was running awesome!

The power is incredible. In High Range, it's pushing me back in my seat. It's spinning gravel 25MPH from a dead stop in 2WD. This is amazing. Nobody in my riding group is going to expect this kind of performance from a Yamaha Rhino.

I have not yet put a big load on it in 4WD Low with the diff locked. I want to break things in a little more before I do that kind of maneuver. But if this is any kind of indication of what to expect, I think I'll like it a lot.

I'm not sure what gave all that bottom end power: whether it was the bump in compression or the increase in displacement, but it's awesome and very welcome.

I foresee broken drivetrain parts in my future... haha! Low speed, high throttle, tire spinning, mud flinging, foot-to-the-floor action just went to the next level.

EDIT: Here is my map that the auto tune has started to make.

PostSubject: Re: ALBA 734 Big Bore for 2011 Rhino 700   Mon Apr 01, 2013 9:16 pm

I had a chance to run the ever living snot out of the new motor. I wanted to give a small update on how it's running and how the tuning process is going.

I ran the motor pretty easy for an hour or so around my yard: accelerating, slowing, doing a couple of heat cycles, etc.

Then a few days later I was able to load up and go to the ranch and run it out in the cattle pasture and down some back roads. I wanted to test for any leaks and I wanted to test to see if this thing would hold up to some spirited driving and some WOT assaults down the straightaways. Finally, I wanted to let the Bazzaz do it's thing with the auto tune function enabled.

I loaded the base map James sent me. Here is a screen shot of the base map. From my understanding, it's the map James had for Hump's Rhino 700. It has a can and throttle body.

So I went and did a 37 mile run. There was no mud on this ride, just back in the trees and down the Farm to Market roads, and general aggressive trail riding.

Let me also add that I had to go back and re-run the auto tune. After about 6-8 hours on the new top end, I noticed I was getting a bog then great power situation if I hammered the throttle from a stop. It also started to miss ever so slightly at low, stead throttle speeds. I suppose as the motor continued to break in the fueling requirements changed a little.

The picture below is the latest fuel map after I re-ran the auto tune.

Overall, this motor runs awesome. I'm new to the hot rod thing, however. If anyone has suggestions or if the fuel map looks weird, let me know. You guys have already helped me so much with this build. And I appreciate it.

Great write up. Gawd, I'm happy with my current JBS set up but can't stop thinking about how much fun it would be to just friggen run over those popo boys. Lol.

I wanted to post up a couple of "finished" pics of my motor. Doesn't it look so pudry?
Rolling Eyes

Seriously though, I figured since I posted up all kinds of pics of my motor in pieces it might be nice to show what it looks like all buttoned up and ready to roll. Not that you can tell any difference. The only clue something has been done is that the cylinder is a slightly different color than the head and block.

I also went ahead and installed the siphon break bottle Nate sent me with the original order. I'm not 100% dead set on the location but it works for now. I can't see this working out too well in the water. Since I currently do not have snorkels, however, this should be all right. If you guys have any good ideas where to mount the bottle, let me know.

Here's a pic of the motor. A keen eye will also notice those Weller head studs.

In this next photo you can see how I rigged up my Bazzaz fuel controller and the corresponding AFX auto tuner. I cleverly sneaked one of my wife's tupperware containers out of the kitchen. I cut a slit in the lid with my box cutter and made a crude hole for the wires to pass through. Then I got my handy black silicone and sealed up the lid and wire passage. If I need access to the boxes inside, I can just peel the lid off and connect my computer. I mounted the container right up under the factory CVT intake. It should stay out of the water for 99% of my riding. If and when I ever do put the snorkels back on, all I'll have to worry about is that siphon break bottle...

Finally, I took a pic of my dash just because. I really missed not being able to drive my Rhino while it was down for the engine build. But now I get to see this dash when I'm out riding. It's a great place to be.

Chris you could just pull the filter off the siphon break and extend the hose to the top of the cage and put the filter back on.

Those are the Livorsi gauges sold by Black Rhino Performance. I have on order a set of Gaffrig gauges with 270* sweep needles and glass faces. My current gauges have 90* sweep and plastic faces.

That's a great idea. I could just put the little filter up under my roof and on top of my stereo.
