I am curious if there is a way to tap into the fuel controler for your RPM output to a gauge? I know with my Bazzaz with my laptop plugged in the RPM's are nice to see while I am tuning and wonder if a person could figure out which wire in the plug that data was coming from and have it tapped into a gauge.

I bought one about 6 months ago , mounted it on the steering shaft and was going to have steve walk me through the set up. then everything here went to hell in a hand basket---and I had the damn handle---lol, so I pulled the rhinojet into my buddys barn until Friday when I went to get it out to take it to HRR. maybe at the ride as we all sit around the camp fire we can figure out how to hook it up. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO way. that is a bad idea-----------------i'm sure I wont be the only one having a few ounces of spirits. it does look good mounted there. sorta like a fake hood scoop. lol.

Well now, all is not lost, perhaps..... In looking at the Rhino 700 wiring diagram, I find that the ignition arrangement is very ODD! Most all other ignition systems send short pulses of electricity to an ignition coil to create a high voltage pulse out of the ignition coil to the spark plug. A CDI ignition charges a capacitor and then dumps the stored charge into the ignition coil to create a much stronger (increased current) pulse. Tachometers are designed to see these short positive pulses in order to measure the pulse rate and display the results in RPM.

The 700 system is such that the ignition coil is continuously connected to +12 Volts. The other side of the ignition coil is not connected to ground as is the case with the other 'normal' ignition systems. That other side of the ignition coil is connected to the Engine Control Module where a circuit connects that wire to ground every time a spark is needed. This makes for a BassAckward igniton system. The Hot side of the coil sees continuous 12 V with negative going dips in that voltage every time there is a spark being generated. The 'ground' side has no voltage on it and is grounded every time there is a spark (which measures as zero volts as well).

There is current flowing as pulses on the ground side and I have an idea to try out as a way to create a usable signal for a tach. Problem is that I have no access to a 700 to work this out. Anybody have a 700 that they are willing to donate to a good cause? It will be a donation as I am not likely to be willing to give it back :-)

You can get an elec. tach on ebay for around 20 bux w/shipping...pretty easy install too. One wire wraps around the spark plug wire & reads the RPM's that way.

I've heard that those don't work so well on the 700 either. Maybe just not enough spark voltage to work without more turns of wire on the spark plug lead ???

Yeah, that is well known. The problem is that the 700 ignition system is an altogether different animal. What animal, I'm not sure about....
