PostSubject: My rhino is a turd but shouldn't be what gives   Fri Sep 20, 2013 2:37 pm

First off let me tell ya what has been done. Rhino started off as a 450 and that wasn't acceptable. Purchased a few 660 motors and got to work. 686 bbk, +4 mm crank, HSR 45 carb, mud buster cam, kimble white springs,Gibson exhaust not slip on complete exhaust, black rhino cdi, high volume fuel pump, billet drive gear plate, jbs Sheave 14oz weights and orange spring. I'm also running 28" ol2 all custom suspension basically it's teryx in rear. I'm not into sand dunes or seeing how fast it will top out my riding style is trails and mud. After spending all this money I'm servilely disappointed as the 450 in stock form seemed to do better. This thing won't spin the tires to save its life. Reverse is a joke might as well not even have it cause if your in the mud it won't go. As far as top speed I have no clue fastest I been was about 30 but only in short burst. Someone please help me figure out what's wrong cause my buddy in his smoking 450 that has half a million miles stomps my A** in the mud and trails.

wow. that would be disappointing. have you checked your wet clutch?

does it sound like it's slipping (drive train) or is the engine just not revving?

Brand new wet clutch. Basically everything is new. It's not slipping just feels so under powered. I'm going to install a wideband soon maybe the tune is holding me back

that's really odd, stock it should run 35/37.

I'm sure it will go faster than 35 my prob is this thing has no bottom end torque. Where we ride doing 30 will get you killed we do mostly trail and mud here

Very Odd !! If I remember correctly, the 450's are lower geared than the 660's, so You should be able to smoke a 660 off the line.
First thing I would check is that Your belt is going all the way to the top of Your secondary sheave. It should actually come out about an eighth of an inch. That is where all Your low end is in the CVT.

Mine is a 660 actually a 720 now. I changed up the clutching over and over added shim removed shim changed springs and weights. Normal cruising is fine just no torque in the mud. Straight drag race I kill the 450 but when it comes to climbing out of holes or climbing technical trails I'm weak

Fuel Map will for sure hurt the way it runs so tuning your fuel map is always a good idea. I would think when in the mud or under a load the wet clutch is the weakest link and even being new they will spin and slip because you arent turning fast enough to engage and bite hard. I would slug the wet clutch FOR SURE hands down I dont know anyone who has and hasnt said major improvement instant wheel movement no more bogging down and barely turning. I maybe one of the weird ones but Torque and horsepower are two different animals out there to chase and for mud and trails I would think the torque monster is what you would want to try and find. Having said that larger throttle bodies and full exhaust, and ported heads are building horsepower not torque the restriction/back pressure builds torque. Just my 2cents.... Torque gets you moving and horsepower pulls you along...........

I'm not a mechanic, but I have alway heard you couldn't match up a 660 motor on a 450 gear chassis. What all did you change out besides the motor? Like a Star @ heaven

you said you changed the rear to T-rex what all did you change ? also on the clutch sure the weights are installed right not flipped over that could kill the bottom end an smoke the wet clutch also . have you ran a A/F gauge to see the mix ratio , also sure the valves are set correct . these are some things to check , send some pics to show an tale might help  good luck

Maddox, Don't know if this helps. This is a piece of information from Steve S from another post. You might PM Steve S, he pretty savvy on technical questions. The post was similar to your issue. Good luck.

........... There is no transfer case, as such. There is a bevel gear arrangement within the engine case that couples the output of the transmission to a through shaft (fore and aft) within the engine cases. That shaft is coupled in-line to the front and rear gearboxes ('differentials' from their outward looks) which drive the wheels. That is it, outside of the engine case. My understanding is that the front and rear gearboxes are common between the 660 and the 450. So that leaves the gearing difference within the engine case. So, unless you can transplant the appropriate innards from one engine to the other, you are stuck with it.

I had read that the 450 was geared so that on the trail it would perform similarly to the 660.

Cam could be off a tooth, weights in cvt could be in wrong, jetting could be off, hard to tell without a a/f guage.

Fuel pump could be bad,bad spark plug, valves not closing all the way, many problems could cause this.fuel hose in tank could be cracked.

Sounded to me that a 660 engine was being dropped into a 450 geared chassis. Is that doable without messing with the gears inside the engine? I've always hear different, but I'm just a Cowboy and no mechanic. I know all things are possible, but feasible, $$? Like a Star @ heaven

Well, I have a 700 and I run 29.5 terminators with a stage 2 cam and msd, clutch work with 16g weights and gold spring.

I know we have different motor set ups, but I have no issue spinning mine in any situation except for diff lock.  These are the heaviest tire on the market and they dig.  I have a decent reverse if I pat the throttle to get it moving and then stay in the throttle.  I don't know much about the 660 set ups for clutches, but im thinking you can go to 12 or 10 gram weights.  Those 28's are slightly heavy and grip better than 29.5s in ol2's.

I know I can go to 14g weights, but I rather keep my cruising rpm decent.  Idk know why you don't have more power, I can blow my tires away just playing around in the trails.  Seems to me you might have a motor issue or something aint right in the clutch....  If you can get on a Dyno and get it tuned, that would help perfectly... I know we got my buddies 660 on right with the Dyno.

In the first post, Maddox said he put a 660 in a 450. If it still has the original differential and if they are lower geared, it should be Bad Ass on low end. Way more than my stock 660.

There is still an issue somewhere tho. My stock 660 with 26's and 4000 miles on the stock, non slugged wet clutch will spin the tires in the mud. In 4X4 - locked - in high gear

ya Larry I agree with you about being stronger on the bottom end , I think he's got another issue timing , clutch set up   that's hurting his bottom end torque

Glad to see you here Camshaw, your an engine guru; do you get the low end out of the 450 engine or when you drop a 660 engine in a 450 you end up with just another 660?Question
