Elk hunt 2013

I had drawn out for the premium bull elk tag on the fish lake this year.  I had been hunting a nice 6x6 380 class bull and a 7x7 400 class bull. I was able to hunt archery, muzzleloader, early and late rifle hunts.  Seen thousands of elk over that time.  I had some nice 360-360 bulls that i coulda dropped on the early rifle hunt but still wanted a bigger elk than the 356 i killed a few years ago.  this last week was the Last hunt the late rifle 9-17.  I had the 380 spotted the morning before the hunt, figured out where he was going to be, on the opener went after him seen nothing.  later in the week i found him again he had crossed onto a different mountain.  I tried for days to get up to where he was to find a shot but he was just in some Nasty Country no way to get to him and i didnt have a gun that could shot 1500 yards.  on the 16th I woke up decided I would shoot something smaller as it was nearing the end of my hunt. We took the truck and rhino loaded on a trailer.  pulled up on a flat I was goin to go after a little 6x6 for meat.   We got all loaded in the rhino and had only gone 100 yards from the truck when i seen a elk laying down.  I had gotten out as soon as i did he got up.  this was a good bull better than the one I was going to shot.  not 10 seconds later a bigger bull got up.  My hearts pounding at this point.  my Dad has his Binocs up watching it,  I fire and a miss he says your over his back.  I go to fire again and my gun jams!  the bulls go over the hill to the other side.  I jump back in the rhino and my dad takes off around to the other side before my ass hits the seat he takes off.  We get to the other side and I see him on the skyline this makes him look huge lol.  I get a shot but another miss!  so the elk go back to the other side.  We see them getting ready to take off thru the flat.  I get out rest my gun on the door of the rhino, try to steady my shot but buck fever is a bitch!  I squeeze the trigger and the Elk goes down!  The Old man starts hoopin and haulerin finally dropped my elk on the second to last day.  The best thing is we were able to pull the trailer right to him and used the winch on the rhino to pull him on it.  Had a great hunt and spent alot of time on the mountain with old man.  Gotta love Hunting

Sweet!

Not every great hunt ends with a spot on Sniper style shot from 1500 yards in high wind on the perfect trophy animal.  As a matter of fact some of my best hunting experiences involved never killing an animal at all.  Just spending some great quality time with my Dad.  Wish I could do it again.

Wow, nice elk.  Best time of the year is taking th boy out hunting.  Can't wait, two weeks away till white tail opens in Pa.
