| Just a quick update: I got the correct rings from Alba Got everything together
I just fired it up for a couple of minutes in my garage. The motor popped right off when I hit the starter. I didn't hear any weird noises on the initial startup. I have a few odds and ends I need to get tied up, but I hope this is a good sign. Time will tell. It's way too early in the game to do a victory dance!
I have to give a shout out to James of JBS. He talked me through the piston and cylinder instal. I didn't even buy this kit from James and he gave me 20 minutes of his time to answer my dumb questions. Ha! Thanks James!
Now that this motor is brand new fresh on the top end, what steps to I need to take to make sure everything is broken in and seated properly? What to I need to keep an eye on. I don't trust this thing yet... LoL

| no syn oil for 600 miles.....we also pull the spark plug on a fresh rebuild and loosen the oil line on top and turn the motor over till we have oil up there then fire it up....forgot to tell you about that...but now its here to stay for people to read..... | |

| I did cycle the starter without the spark plug before actually trying to start the motor. Good tip about the oil line though.
And by the way, your advice on putting the piston in the cylinder and then connecting the piston to the rod worked like a champ!

| run it through a few heat/cool down cycles to seat the rings. (let it warm up and then shut it down and let it cool for couple of hours) after you get it on the trail, don't over-rev it, but keep the revs moving up and down and don't lug the engine. (don't put a lot of stress on it at low revs). congrats for getin' er done! that's a big accomplishment! | |

| What should I do? I have run the motor, not much like a few minutes tops, but the motor has run been run with the wrong oil rings.
What about my gaskets and Weller head and cylinder studs; can those be reused when I go back into the motor?
I'm a very patient man. But even this has got me frustrated. My faith in CP is not real strong. I'm hoping that Alba can make help this right.

| gaskets should be replaced...studs would be fine. At this point I dont think any of our faith in them is real strong. Im even questioning if they know if they sent you the wrong ring???? | |

| I would think the head studs should be fine and see if CP or who ever sent the wrong rings should reimburse you for the gaskets atleast. Just think your going to be a pro at this by the time your done. Can I bring my motor over | |

| I called Alba this morning at 9a Pacific Time.
Nate could not believe this fiasco. Alba has never charged me for any of the rings I've received nor for any of the shipping. Remember, I was the one who broke a ring on installation resulting in all this mess.
I wonder if my original rings were even correct???
CP is supposed to be better than this, right? Why didn't they call me when they realized they sent the wrong rings overnight... I mean they had to have figured it out because they then early morning overnight shipped this latest package of oil rings.

Do you still have the first one you put in ? What color was the dot on it ? Alba has proven themselves as a great co. and yeah I think the first thing CP should have done is give you a call. I'm guessing they had your # too

| Nate from Alba got back in touch with me about this piston oil ring fiasco.
In short: he told me that I had the correct rings in my motor. He called CP and their shipping thought they sent me the wrong rings and then sent me another set of oil rings (which showed up at my house). Alba assured me that I had the right rings in my motor. This is the craziest story I've heard about parts and shipping.
Another thing I figured out - my original set of oil rings were incorrect. I don't know if that was what was causing my problems with installation that lead to a broken ring or what... I'll never know.
CP has got to get their stuff together! Alba has really stepped up and taken care of me and covered for a lot of CP's mistakes. If Alba had not have been so good to me, I would have been very displeased.
I have an oil leak I'm trying to address near the cylinder base gasket area. It's dripping down the timing chain side on to the area where the oil lines connect to the block. I'm guessing the new base gasket isn't sealing correctly.
Thanks, guys, for all your help and support.

| When i put mine together,i put a drop of oil on each of the cylinder studs, torqued to 45ft lbs each..let it sit for about 15 miniutes then re torqued all 4 cylinder studs again..then put the head on and did the same on it,forgot to mention that i sprayed copper coat on both sides of my base gasket before i put it on because i have had problems with oil seeping by it in the past, but since my last rebuild with the copper coat...no problems!! hope this helps.... | |

| When I installed the gaskets, I installed them dry. Was this a mistake?
I did the bolt tightening similar to you. I put oil on the threads and tightened to 25lb-ft in a criss-cross patern. Then tightened to 45lb-ft in a cross pattern.
So I guess I gotta take this thing apart again anyway, huh? The oil is dripping a drop every minute, it seems, when the motor is running.
So close but so far... LoL

| When I did mine I put pematex tack & seal on the base gasket to keep it place and make sure it would seal. Has anyone else used it ? | |

| If you are dripping oil like that from your base gasket now..its not gonna get better..i would tear it back down and make sure everything is super clean, use cometic gaskets and use the copper coat gasket sealer on the base gasket only..spray both sides and wait till it gets tacky, then reassemble, but i would talk to james first..to see what all you need to do,but i am a firm believer in double checking your torque on the studs when u put it together! | |
