ROD Side Play

What is an acceptable amount of side play in the rod. I measured the space between the bottom of the rod and flywheel and it is within acceptable tolerances. But i just am curious if that measurement is good, is it safe to assume the amount of side play is good? If not, what is an acceptable amount of play and how do you measure it?
