I just purchased a used 07 660 with 6800 miles. The motor was allegedly replaced at about 4800. When I hit 23mph it cuts out and sputters, very smooth at 22 just when I hit 23. It does have 25 inch tires. I am being told it may be a clutch problem and was referred to this forum to ask for James. I will be using it for plowing and trail riding.

Sounds like it's hitting the rev limiter. This may be a stupid question, but was it in Low gear?

Didn't Crusty just have a problem similar to this and said it was the reverse switch or something like that? It thought it was in reverse so it killed the speed?

Have You serviced or inspected the CVT yet. Common problems for hitting rev limiter early is worn belt - flipped sheave weight - dirty sheave.... Here is what an 07 660 will do with just a CDI and sheave kit from JBS...........

How about low range !
Remember this is a very heavy stock 660 motor with full windshield

I did have this issue and mine was the reverse switch, try riding in the dark and see if the reverse light lights up at all, I could barely see mine in the dark and couldn't see it at all in the daytime. If it's lighting up then your reverse switch is bad, it's located under your air box and has a single wire going to it. If it's bad it causes your machine to think its in reverse and it hits the rev limiter real quick just as it would if you were actually in reverse. You can ground the wire and bypass the switch and have no rev limiter in reverse but you will lose the light even when you are in reverse. I would also check your roller weights in your primary sheave, my buddy was having issues with his going slow as hell and found 2 broken rollers in his. Good luck and let us know what you find.
