PostSubject: The secondary spring nut missing link - noob questions   The secondary spring nut missing link - noob questions Icon_minitimeFri Jun 21, 2013 12:27 pm

Let me preamble by saying I'm a pretty clever guy. I can usually make something work, but sometimes end up wrecking things trying.

Well I've googled the snot out of the internet - I've watched all James' videos regarding the secondary, I think, and I'm still missing something. I've learned you can use a 2x4 to move the engine over to get the secondary out... but where are people sticking the 2x4? in between what and what?

Then, once you get the secondary out, is there a homebrew trick for getting the spring nut off that doesn't need a special tool? I've got a giant C-clamp and other sort of workshop clamps, is there a way to use those?

Thanks in advance!
Chris

By the way, the spring nut is 46mm if you're a metric guy. Other sites report 1 13/16" which is within a few thousandths of an inch.

Thanks for the info... are you ratchet strapping the motor over to the passenger side or towards the driver side?

lucky I still have my stock wheels. pimp shrimp.

and seems like everyone is just 1/2 impacting the spring and clutch nuts?

It's a heck of a lot easier to use a large piece of thick PVC pipe about 2 feet long pry it in between the 2ndary and motor pulling toward you. Pulling the spring inward tightening it. Works like a champ. I don't know why everyone's complicating it with moving the motor over

In all honesty my 660 didn't require pulling or pushing motor over at all! Maybe the 700s of different I don't know. I drilled a 2 inch hole withholesaw in at 2 x 8 and used it like a teeter totter fulcrum to compress the spring. The socket fit inside the hole to take the 46mm nut off.

So for those with the 660 there's a bar in the way. I took off the plastic around the drivers seat base and removed the 4 bolts and metal plate that has the pin on it that locks into your seat. This gives you allitle more room to work with as that plate sits about an inch over that bar next to the 2ndary sheeve. This gives you more room to work with. I then took a heavy gauge PVC pipe 2 feet or so and once the 2ndary is out as far as it will go slip the PVC pipe down to the right side of the shaft coming out of the motor. Use it as a fulcrum and push the top of the pipe your holding toward the motor the bottom of the PVC should be pressing against the spring toward you! Once enough pressure is on it use your left hand to slide the 2ndary to the right. On mine the first time I slide it over the end of the bolt/threads usually ends up out of the hole and up against the sheeve then with a 2nd pry It pops over another inch or so and frees up the entire sheeve to come out. Thought it was allitle more tricky getting sheeve back on but same concept worked! Hopefully this makes sence, however you do it its just more work than its worth moving the engine over. Just got back from my local yamaha dealer and one of there service guys had been doing all of them loosening up the motor mounts to get room to clear... No thxx

I just used a ratchet strap from top of the motor to the passenger side cage and tightened it up a little and there was more than enough room to remove the secondary and you don't have to worry about busted knuckles which I usually get when prying anything over lol
