- thx Steve, I tried both settings and it still read 800rpm at idle. I already got my money back, sent back to amazon. could it be the msd? it is a staight foward hook up, not too difficult, so I'm not sure. to me its worthless if it is not accurate.
I'm puzzled, there are 9 different settings possible, not just 2. Did you follow the procedure step by step? I doubt it is the MSD, as the tachometer is working as a tach should work, it is is not 'inaccurate' but rather just miscalibrated. Does the tach now read 1000 RPM when it is in the setting mode? If so, try setting it at 500 in the setting mode. You should then see it read your engine idle as either 400 RPM or 1600 RPM. If it went the wrong way, then set it for 2000 in the setting mode.

Did you find the setting procedure to be the same as the instructions from their website?

| I can't remember who posted it bur there is an adjustment for the idle on the 700 on the throttle body where the throttle cable hooks up above it theres a locknut and a screw for the slide setting. it shows it in the service manual in the throttle cable adjustment picture but doesn't call it out. | |

| I did all I could do with changing the setting and could not get it to idle at 1500. maybe james can chime in and tell us why he thinks his did not work. i have yet to hear from someone with a 700 that it works on, so far correct me if Im wrong its been all 660 guys | |

Did you use the green wire to coil or the brown with inductive on the plug wire?

| Hey, guys, I have a thought about what might be going wrong with the 700 tach hookup. The 660 has the 12V pulse switching momentarily happening in the CDI upstream of the coil (the other end of the coil is always grounded). The 700 has the opposite thing happening, in that the hot side of the coil is always hooked up to ignition hot 12V and the other end (ground) is floating. The ECU switches the "ground" end of the coil to ground momentarily for a spark to be generated. Bass Ackward of anything that I have seen before.
I'm thinking that the spark voltage is of opposite polarity (or some strange thing, anyhow). The tach hookup instructions show winding the "red" pickup wire in a particular direction where the wind starts towards the end closest to the coil and the tip of the winding ends up toward the spark plug end of the spark plug wire.
I'd like someone who has been trying to make this work for a 700 to try winding the wraps in the opposite direction upon the spark plug wire (winding tip toward the coil instead). And, if that does not make for a change, try winding the "black" wire around the spark plug wire and grounding the "red" wire instead.

| Oh, an other thing that might be going on is that the spark voltage on a 700 is likely to be quite a bit weaker than on the 660. The 660 (from what we have been told) is a CDI ignition, where a large charge is stored in a capacitor and then switched into the coil circuit for the spark event. I do not see how any thing like that can be done on the ground side of the coil. There is nothing on the + side of the coil since it is fed by the ignition hot 12 VDC and nothing else.
What this means is that perhaps it will take a lot more wraps around the spark plug wire to get the same pulse voltage to the tachometer circuit. A thing to try, even before the first things that I suggested, is to put a lot more than the 12 wraps max that are suggested by the tach instructions.
Here's hoping...... | |
