HELP!!! Where does this bolt go?

When you install this ball and spring and bolt what gear does the shifter have to be in,i looked down the hole with a trouble light and it looks like the ball could fall into the middle cases which would mean haveing to split the engine apart to retrive the ball,or am i missing something any one know what to do .thanks in asvance

I don't think it matters what gear your in. The little ball fits into indents which holds the shifter in its gear. When I did my overhaul I had the wrong size bolt ,it was out of a grizzly and would not allow it to shift ...too long!

Does it shift now?

Probe the hole with a small screw driver, does it bottom out or have a seat for the ball to rest on?

I have rebuilt may motor,which has taken a few weeks,so i am just trying to make sure the ball goes into the right place i can see what i guess are detents,so you just drop the ball in then the spring and bolt and tourgue it down and i should be good to go.i can shift trans by hand and everything seems to work the motor is still on the bench,

Yeah, just put the ball back into the hole, slide the spring in, and than install bolt and torque. Don't forget some blue loc-tite on the threads, and make sure they're clean. Than just cycle the shifter through the gears and make sure everything feels good.

Do you feel the detent while shifting, did you feel it before?

Yes it shifted fine before the rebuild and it shifts smoothly now,and you can feel each detent as you shift.

I noticed oil the other day and realized I had lost a bolt as well. It is just to the right of the oil filter on my 07 660 and on the top side of where the linkage hooks up. I was told it was probably the detent bolt by the parts guy, but the shifting feels normal and feels like it's hitting the detents. There is a bolt on the front side as well, not sure if that is the detent bolt and this is just a plug? Can't seem to find anyone even at the 2 dealerships to help me with this. Also if it is the detent bolt, can the ball fall down between the case and shift cam? I can't see it or pull anything out with a magnet.

ok, in the picture I posted the bolt missing is facing up, and there is another one just to the right of the of it, facing toward the front of the machine.  If I am reading this right, the other one, which is still there, is the one with the detent ball and this one on top is just a plug?
