| A tach would be sweet. Im just guessing wouldn't a guy just wire off the coil for the tach pickup? unless I'm missing something? subscribedx2 | |

| I think on a Rhino, You connect it to the CDI. BRP has some, but they are $225....WOW. Too rich for my blood ! | |

| As some of you folk have probably guessed, I have a tendency to go off into strange territory at times..... When I put a tachometer into my 2004, I ended up using a Polaris snowmobile tach. These snowmobiles have a direct drive alternator (stator and rotor) that rotates at exactly the same speed as the crankshaft, just like the Rhino does. The important thing is to have the '6 pulse' model of tachometer to get the correct RPM reading. This is because the Rhino has 6 individual coils wired in each phase string, giving 6 cycles for each revolution of the crank. I got the tach off of Ebay for something like $40 way back when. To hook the tach up, one simply has to connect a pair of wires into any 2 of the white wires coming out of the stator and hook them into the input leads of the tachometer. There are also other wires in the tach that hook onto 12 VDC and ground for internal lighting and other circuitry. This stator signal source on the Rhino could probably also be used to trigger any automotive 6 cylinder tachometer with the proper signal conditioning circuitry in between. The stator nor rectifier would not like to see any path to ground, so the circuitry would need to be isolated from ground. This idea is only for anyone that would like to experiment with the thought, which is something that I might do one of these days. | |

| I have read somewhere of people using the Equus 8068 or 8080. I think they set the tachometer up for 2 cylinder use. I just don’t know how they hook it up via plug wire pickup or negative side of coil. I just don’t want to spend money if these want work. | |

| red wire taped to pink wire on rhinos power outlet, white goes to hot wire blue wire when head lights are turned on, it just lights the tach back light, hope this makes sense | |

Alright! The tach can be quite helpful in dianosing RPM related issues. Also kinda fun to watch bouncing back and forth as you power around the corners. Just don't take your eyes completely off the road A big tach is nice that way.

| thanks guys for all your help, I suck at wiring. it is working good. What is does my 700 with an msd 2d and JBS sheave redline at? the tach shows an idle of 800rpm, is that accurate + or - 100 rpm? btw green back light looks sweet with my green dash and green rhino...got lucky for 60 bucks if its accurate? | |

| Does the idle sound low? Try to turn it up until the wet clutch engages maybe? | |

Hmmm, that sounded a little low to me, so I double checked it in the service manual. The 660 service manual says 1500 +/- 50 RPM. I didn't find a spec in the 700 manual after a quick sweep through the index. Being controlled by the ECU, I expect that it is not manually adjustable. What might be happening is that the tach is reading half speed. Perhaps you have it set at the wrong cylinder count? Contrary to normal expectation, the tach should be set for 2 cylinder operation (even though it is a one cylinder engine). This is because the Rhino has a 'lost spark ignition', as the ignition sense coil is at the crankshaft and not at the camshaft (as is normal in the automotive world). The compression/power stroke TDC happens every other revolution of the crankshaft (4 stroke engine). The spark plug fires once every revolution, such that every other spark is 'wasted', but does no harm. This is the situation for the 660 engine, and I would expect that it is the same for the 700 engine.
