| OK, posted this on RF, but lets get it here from the real master. So my ride stops moving on the road on my way back to camp one night. I get towed home...I could hear a tick that got worse before it stopped rolling. Turns out I was 1.25L low on my oil...apparently it spits out oil or something when your riding it hard? Anyway no matter, my bad for not checking the oil...engine never died or stalled, but I just stopped getting forward motion.
Engine has a slap or tick to it now. I have a guy that has pulled the top end of the motor apart. He says its not my valves, and I assume its not my piston? I just got home and need to get some ideas, and I will be talking to him this evening hopefully. So what could it be, something in the bottom end? When I started it up at home, I put it in gear and pushed on the gas with my hand, felt like it wanted to move, but I don't have much room in my garage, and getting it moving wasn't my goal, just wanted to see if the tick stopped after I got some oil splashing around...it didn't.
What is the next step? I gotta pull my motor out? its gonna be a bearing on my crank or something? if I remove the clutch can I get a good look inside the bottom end?

| update: So my buddy has contacted yamaha, and they basically told him that he doesn't want to go into the bottom end of the motor. They say there are too many finicky parts and that only a pro should do it. He said he took my spark plug out, turned the engine over and it was fine, then he did it again and heard a clunk, did it again and it was fine, did it again and heard a clunk. Does all of this make sense? I trust the guy working on my ride, I don't trust the shops that are telling him he shouldn't do it. They also say that a replacement motor is hard to find and that they have 3 of these rhinos sitting at their shop waiting for new motors. I find this all hard to believe. How tricky is the bottom end...guess Im in some hot water here with my ride...if I gotta replace something in the bottom, is there an upgrade I should be putting in? | |

| they also told him that these motors are notorious for this...more truth or mistruth? | |

| Sounds like rod and/or main bearing problems. I don't know what to tell you. If you find that you need a new rod or crank, don't replace it with factory parts, upgrade to something better. Once you figure out what all you need, call JBS. | |

| the big question is, is it something that a mechanic can do, or should I leave it to the ATV pro's? | |

| The rhino engine is a piece of cake if you have been working on them for awhile, Not for the first timer. | |

| Thats what happened to my engine,Yamaha dealer told me that the motor wasnt worth tearing down to see what was wrong. They wanted to sell me a new engine for 6000.oo dollars plus a 1000.oo to re and re it.Then there is taxes on top of that. Then there is also probley other hidden costs that they will come up with on the way.I torn the engine down my self and its tottaly rebuildable,so i might as well ad some horse power to it likeChrisH is doing. If you can take it apart with your friend and see whats wrong with the engine it might not be that hard to do as you think. There is no shortage of guys on this site that are willing to help with any questions.Good luck | |

| Strip it down, it's screwed up already so you might as well give it a shot and learn along the way. As you encounter roadblocks just ask and post pictures, the people on this site will guide you along. | |

And my other question is...how do I get the drive shafts out? Do I gotta pull the entire rear end out to get the motor out?

| Just unbolt front or rear and move it just enough to get one to slid out. Then the motor comes out pretty easy. | |

| yep it sounds like what happen to mine after i bought it but i was two quarts low. but the dealer went good for it but they had to put all new from da crank up to even a new head and it wasnt really knocking that bad i was just glad they went good for it. i would get a syphon break for it to make sure you dont lose your oil after rebuild | |
